Early Life and Career

Tony Evers was born in Plymouth, Wisconsin, in 1951. The son of a physician, he grew up in a family that valued education. After graduating from high school, Evers earned a bachelor's degree in science education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Evers began his teaching career in 1974 at Madison West High School. He taught science for 10 years before becoming the school's principal in 1984. Evers served as principal for 12 years, during which time he oversaw a period of significant improvement in the school's academic performance.

Entering the Political Arena

In 2008, Evers was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction. As Superintendent, he led the development of new academic standards for Wisconsin schools and worked to increase funding for public education.
